Government policy affects almost every area of our life, so it is impossible to reduce any election down to just one issue; however, there is no doubt in my mind that the most important issue of our time is abortion, and the second most important issue is euthanasia. So, with that in mind I have evaluated every party being represented in Qld during this election in relation to where they stand on the issue of life. I have divided them all into five general categories; 100% pro-life, generally pro-life, fence-sitters, generally pro-death, 100% pro-death.
100% Pro-Life
1. Family First
Family First is the only 100% pro-life party, as a party they are openly opposed to both abortion and euthanasia, all their candidates are pro-life, and their leader (Lyle Shelton) has taken a public pro-life stance for decades.
Generally Pro-Life
2. Katter Party
Katter Party leader Robbie Katter introduced the “Babies Born Alive Protection Bill” into the Qld parliament last year, but it was blocked by a combined effort from both major parties (Labor & LNP). Being pro-life is not a requirement for Katter Party candidates, therefore, not all their candidates will be pro-life.
3. One Nation
One Nation openly holds to a pro-life policy; however, not all their candidates personally hold to a pro-life view.
4. HEART Party
HEART Party are opposed to sex-selection abortion, and advocate for women to be offered alternatives to abortion. They also advocate for potential euthanasia victims to be fully informed about their options before being given treatment.
Fence-Sitters
5. Gerrard Rennick People First Party
Gerrard Rennick People First Party does not have an official position on the issue of life. Based on what I have heard from Gerrard he is opposed to late-term abortion, but does not see the issue of life as being an important political issue.
6. Trumpet of Patriots
As far as I can find Trumpet of Patriots do not have an official position on the issue of life. However, as they hold to traditional western values, they are more likely to be pro-life then pro-death.
7. Citizens Party
As far as I can find Australian Citizens Party do not have an official position on the issue of life. However, as they hold to traditional western values, they are more likely to be pro-life then pro-death.
8. Great Australian Party
As far as I can find the Great Australian Party does not have an official position on the issue of life. However, they claim that they want to return things as close as possible to the 1900 Australian Constitution and abortion and euthanasia where illegal (other than in case of medical emergencies) at that time, so if there are consistent, they would advocate for laws along those lines. But as they do not say that anywhere on their website, I would not count on that being the case.
9. Libertarian Party
As far as I can find the Libertarian Party does not have an official position on the issue of life, and I would not even try to guess where they might land on the issue.
10. Jacquie Lambie Network
As far as I can find the Jacquie Lambie Network does not have an official position on the issue of life, and I would not even try to guess where they might land on the issue.
11. Legalise Cannabis Party
As far as I can find the Legalise Cannabis Party does not have an official position on the issue of life, and I would not even try to guess where they might land on the issue.
12. Indigenous Aboriginal Party of Australia
As far as I can find the Indigenous Aboriginal Party of Australia does not have an official position on the issue of life, and I would not even try to guess where they might land on the issue.
13. Australian Democrats
As far as I can find the Australian Democrats do not have an official position on the issue of life, and I would not even try to guess where they might land on the issue.
14. Liberal National Party
The LNP does not have an official position on issues relating to life. Although there are a handful of pro-life politicians in the LNP, Liberal party leader Peter Dutton has told his candidates not to discuss the issue of abortion during this campaign, and as far as I can find all of them (including the allegedly pro-life one’s), have dutifully obeyed. What this indicates is that all of these allegedly pro-life candidates in the LNP believe the party is more important than following their own convictions. And considering the extreme nature of the current abortion laws in Australia to maintain the status quo, which is what the LNP seems determined to do, puts you closer to the pro-death position then the pro-life one.
15. Australia’s Voice
As far as I can find Australia’s Voice does not have an official position on issues of life. Although based on what I know about the party I would suspect that they are more likely to be pro-death than pro-life.
Generally Pro-Death
16. Fusion Party
As far as I can find the Fusion Party does not have an official position on issues of life. However, being that they are a party based on the religion of Secular Humanism it is almost certain that they would be pro-death.
17. Labor Party
The Labor Party does not have an official position on abortion or euthanasia, however, there track record speaks for itself and there are clearly supportive of both.
18. Sustainable Australia Party
I cannot find an explicit statement from the Sustainable Australia Party on either abortion or euthanasia. However, they state that slowing population growth is one of their core values, which is a philosophy which is inherently linked to both abortion and euthanasia. Therefore, it is safe to assume they are pro-death.
100% Pro-Death
19. Socialist Alliance
The Socialist Alliance explicitly state that they support unrestricted access to abortion, and explicitly deny the fact that a pre-born baby is a real human.
20. Animal Justice Party
The Animal Justice Party clearly state that they support unrestricted access to abortion.
21. Greens
The Greens are and always have been a pro-death party, supporting unrestricted access to abortion and euthanasia.
